How to see Spotify lyrics on your Mac.

Spotify for Mac can show lyrics inside its own window. If you want them while you work in other apps, floating on top, in the menu bar or in the MacBook notch, here is how.

Use the lyrics view in Spotify

  1. Open the Spotify app on your Mac and play a song.
  2. In the playback bar at the bottom of the window, click the Lyrics button (the microphone icon).
  3. The lyrics fill the main area of the Spotify window and scroll with the song.

This works well while Spotify is in front. The moment you switch to another app, the lyrics go behind it, which is exactly when most people want them: while writing, designing, coding or browsing.

Keep Spotify lyrics on top of other apps

Dynamic Lyrics for Mac reads what Spotify is playing and shows the synced lyrics wherever you choose:

Set it up

  1. Download Dynamic Lyrics from the Mac App Store and open it.
  2. When macOS asks whether Dynamic Lyrics can control Spotify, choose OK. This is how it knows which song is playing and where you are in it.
  3. Press play in Spotify. Press ⇧⌘L to show Floating Lyrics, or ⇧⌘C for the Lyric Capsule.

Free to download. The lyrics window is free, and Dynamic Pro unlocks every other surface.

Spotify lyrics not showing on Mac

If the Lyrics button is missing or greyed out in Spotify, try these in order:

  1. Check the song. Not every track has lyrics, especially new releases, live versions and instrumentals.
  2. Update Spotify. Choose Spotify › About Spotify to check for updates.
  3. Leave private session and offline mode. Both can limit what loads.
  4. Sign out and back in to refresh your account and region.

Dynamic Lyrics finds lyrics on its own, so it often has them when Spotify does not. If a song genuinely has no synced lyrics, it says so plainly instead of showing the wrong words.

Dynamic Lyrics isn't following Spotify

If you clicked Don't Allow earlier, macOS won't ask again. Open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Automation, find Dynamic Lyrics, and turn on Spotify. Quitting and reopening Dynamic Lyrics applies the change.

Questions

Why are Spotify lyrics not showing on my Mac?

Lyrics are not available for every song or in every region. Update the Spotify app, check the song on another device, and make sure you are not in a private or offline session. Dynamic Lyrics looks up lyrics independently, so a song without lyrics in Spotify may still have them in Dynamic Lyrics.

Can Spotify lyrics stay on top of other windows on Mac?

Not in the Spotify app itself. Dynamic Lyrics adds a floating lyrics window that stays above every app, including full-screen apps, and can ignore mouse clicks so it never gets in the way.

Can I show Spotify lyrics in the Mac menu bar?

Yes, with Dynamic Lyrics. Turn on Show current lyric under Menu Bar in Settings and choose how many characters to show, from 12 to 48.
